Steps to Follow When Removing Rust from Stainless Steel Balustrades

Newly installed stainless steel balustrades may have the ability to resist rust and corrosion even when exposed to weather elements. However, over time, the protective layer can rub off leaving the metal vulnerable to corrosion. Rust patches on your stainless steel balustrades can degrade the aesthetics of your patio, balcony, or staircase and need to be removed. How do you go about this? Here are some of the key steps that you should follow to remove the surface rust and protect your stainless steel balustrades from extensive corrosion in the future.

Clean the loose rust

Loose rust can transfer onto the hands of people who come into contact with the balustrades. To remove it, you will need to spray the balustrades with a cleaning agent comprising of phosphoric acid. Phosphoric acid cleans the steel metal and offers temporary protection from rust. It converts iron oxide to iron phosphate, which is a more stable protective layer. After spraying the cleaner, wipe down the metal using a dump piece of cloth. Rinse it in water occasionally and remove as much rust as possible.

Remove remaining corrosion

Depending on the extent of the corrosion, you may find that rust has penetrated into the stainless steel metal. You will have to remove all the corrosion to ensure that it does not proceed after removing the loose rust. The best cleaner for this job is a rust-remover. You will find this in most local stores. Go for the non-toxic type to prevent exposure to harmful chemicals. Apply the rust remover onto the areas with corrosion and leave it to saturate for some time. Use a wet piece of cloth to wipe down the rust. You can repeat the procedure until there are no traces of rust.

Polish the metal

Once the metal is clean, you need to polish the areas that have been treated and restore their luster. You will need a rotary tool, buffing bit, and stainless steel polishing compound. Insert the buffing bit into the rotary tool, apply some polishing compound, and work on the surface until it achieves a smooth, polished surface.

Coat the metal

After polishing, you need to apply a protective coat that will prevent exposure of the metal to corrosive elements. Choose a clear protective coat that's specially made for stainless steel metal. Apply two coats so as to get the most protection from corrosion. Ensure that you leave the first coat to dry before applying a second one.

Stainless steel balustrades are aesthetically appealing and functional structure in every home. However, when exposed to corrosive elements, they can lose their appeal. Following these steps will effectively clean the rust and protect the metal from corrosion.
